S4S Response to Recent Home Office Guidance

Safety4Sisters is alarmed by the Home Office's decision to target asylum-seekers as potential perpetrators of VAWG with its Understanding behaviours and expectations in the UK: a guide for asylum seekers.

In the UK, a woman is killed by a man every three days. Misogyny and VAWG pervades the whole country; singling out asylum-seekers contributes to far-right narratives that weaponise VAWG to fuel anti-racist and anti-migrant rhetoric.

As a specialist by and for organisation supporting Black, minoritised and migrant women, our experience shows that prevention of VAWG happens through culturally competent understanding, not racist scapegoating. We echo calls from specialist organisations that support and campaign for victim-survivors of VAWG for the Home Office to produce genuine resources for victim-survivors to understand their rights and how to seek the support they need.
